How to learn to Wheelie without Falling: A beginner's guide

Learning to wheelie without falling is impossible, but you can do it safely. This does not mean completely eliminating the possibility of falling, but significantly reducing it. How?

Control First, Wheelie Second

You should already be able to handle these basic skills:

  • throttle and clutch control;
  • front and rear braking;
  • starts and low-speed manoeuvres;
  • body position;
  • gear changes.

If you cannot control the motorcycle safely on both wheels, attempting a wheelie means exponentially increasing your chances of getting seriously hurt.

Never Practise on Roads Open to Traffic

Assuming that you already know how to ride a motorcycle, the second step is to choose a large, obstacle-free area with no traffic, where you can practise without putting yourself or others in danger.

Protective Gear Is NOT Optional

When you are learning, you make mistakes. When you make mistakes, you fall. When you fall, you get hurt. Unless you are a sadist, you do not want to get hurt.

A back protector, jacket, boots, technical trousers and, of course, a helmet are the minimum essential equipment needed to protect yourself. Remember that EVEN at low speed, a fall can have extremely serious consequences.

Motorcycle Checks

The motorcycle must be in perfect condition before you begin. The main things you need to check are tyre pressure, chain tension, clutch operation and throttle return. Pay particular attention to the brakes, especially the rear brake.

If a control is not working properly, it will inevitably end up hurting you.

Progress Gradually

To perform a wheelie, select a low gear and gradually accelerate until you feel the front wheel lift off the ground. If you have difficulty lifting it, shift down a gear or use the clutch. At first, 20–30 centimetres will be enough.

Once you have repeated this process many times and understand exactly which gear to use and how much throttle to apply, you are ready to start using the brake.

Knowing how to use the brake is essential: lift the wheel and press the brake, lift the wheel and press the brake. The more you repeat this process, the quicker you will become at performing wheelies safely.

You will realise how important this step is when your brain applies the brake before your reflexes react, preventing you from flipping backwards.

From this point on, everything becomes easier. Lift the wheel higher and higher until you reach the balance point. Whenever you feel tired and stiff during a practice session, go home and rest.

Mistakes to Avoid

Many accidents are caused by rushing or by the desire to impress others.

The most common mistakes include:

  • practising on the road;
  • training without protective gear;
  • using a motorcycle that is too powerful;
  • focusing only on the throttle;
  • ignoring the rear brake;
  • stiffening your arms and body;
  • continuing when you are tired;
  • attempting something just to record a video or follow your friends.

Safety Also Means Respect

Learning to wheelie requires patience, discipline and many hours of practice. There are no shortcuts, and there is nothing wrong with progressing slowly.

True control is not only about being able to lift the front wheel. It is about knowing where to practise, how to prepare and when to decide not to do it.

Bikelife is freedom, expression and brotherhood. But without responsibility, that freedom can put you and the people around you in danger.

Protect yourself, respect the spaces around you and build your technique one step at a time. Style comes with control.
